Fire to Wander

Follow along as I document my journey to early retirement and a nomadic lifestyle.

Scariest Thing in The World

Am I being a little dramatic? I don’t think so. It physically makes me itch to think of continuing to work in order to live…for the rest…of my…life.

Funnily enough, every person I’ve told this to in my life has had the exact same reaction, regardless of their age: I don’t think I could stop working…I would be so bored.

Really? Boredom is the reason you want to keep going to work?? Then you really need to take a look at your life and figure out how to make it more enjoyable. Life is not meant to be spent slaving away making someone else richer just so you can barely scrape by.

I understand that there are people who have “callings” and they genuinely want to keep working until they can no longer do so. In that case: amazing! I’m so happy for you!

I have so many hobbies and goals and desires that have nothing to do with work. Although I very much enjoy what I do, and now that I have a good manager I actually enjoy going to work, yet I still know in my bones that I do not want to HAVE to do this.

I have always been the type of person that does things on their own terms. This means that I must do things because I truly want to, not because I’m being told to.

I guess I’m just naturally rebellious.

When I have achieved financial independence, will I continue to work? Who knows? All I know, is that I want it to be a choice. A real one, not: go to work or be homeless. That’s not a choice.

What is financial independence?

Financial independence means that you have enough wealth of your own accord that you no longer need a job to support your lifestyle.

This is my ultimate goal: financial independence.

In my mind, this is the ultimate freedom. You now have complete control over your life. You can go to work if you enjoy working, but if you lose the passion you can walk away. You can leave a relationship that doesn’t nurture you. You can move if you want to be somewhere else. You can eat what you like. You can live your days on your own body’s rhythm and not based on the work day. You can prioritize what you value rather than employment.

Most of all, you finally have the greatest asset of all: time.

This is what I’m working toward and this is where I will eventually be.
