First Post!

I started this blog in the hopes of inspiring someone out there who can relate, to do something that seems impossible. Although I’m not yet where I want to be, I know I’ll get there!

I love reading about personal finance and specifically love reading about women that are on this journey. However, one thing that inevitably comes up: they are married or in a partnership. This seemingly small difference is HUGE. I didn’t think it was at first, I remember hearing about the “single tax” from a woman in personal finance and I scoffed. Scoffed! Granted, although I was single when I heard it, I did have a roommate. I didn’t think it was a big deal because my biggest expense was housing and due to having chosen to share my home it wasn’t as huge of an expense as it could’ve been.

Her point though, was that for a woman to live alone it is vastly more expensive than when she shares a life with a husband or partner. While she was right, for most people anyway, it didn’t seem like that to me at the time because I had no issue sharing my home with a roommate. Now, years after I first heard that, I still disagree with her because even if I had a partner: I would want separate houses. At the very least: separate most rooms.

So basically, my life will be “expensive” regardless of whether I’m single or not. Probably more so if I’m not, actually, based on past experience.

It is true that life is a bit more expensive when you’re on your own. Even just buying food, since you can’t buy in bulk to save. I still don’t see why it needs to be seen as a “single tax”, if anything it’s more like a “loner tax”. If you choose to be completely on your own, you’ll pay a bit more. That doesn’t bother me even now that I no longer have a roommate. However, I’m not above getting a roommate again if my expenses unexpectedly go up! It’s one of my backup plans actually. (Yes, one of.)

My life hasn’t been the smoothest ride, I’ll likely talk about that more later.

Regardless of this, I’ve done everything I could in order to succeed anyway.

My goal: to be financially free so I can travel the world and live a nomadic lifestyle.

Small disclaimer: I’m not just starting my journey, I started this journey years ago, about 7, actually. I can and will make a post about my milestones, but for now I want to actually start the blog I’ve been putting off for years!

I’ve been telling myself to start a blog for years now, way before I even began my FIRE journey, because I wanted to blog about my travels. Yet, I’ve always found reasons not to. So here I am, finally stepping out. My blog will be mainly about two things: money and travel. I can’t really have one without the other. Exploring the world is my passion. My raison d’être. I don’t just like to go to new places. I like to eat their food, learn their language, meet the people, see their nature! Drink their beer!

I’m excited about writing this now because it’ll help keep me accountable so that I can keep better track of my achievements. I tend to write in journals and then randomly stop and then find the journal years later and want to keep going, but now it’s missing a lot of my life!

So I have a goal for this blog: I want to write one post each day for 365 days. This is going to be a habit that I create and keep! After that, I can decide what I want to do. For now, onward!
